Sample Chapter PREFACE In my consulting engagements with clients, I have met those who have provided me with strong encouragement to write a book on managing change. Some have followed my articles in various publications such as The Corporate World, The Banker's Journal, The Malaysian Tatler and the local newspaper, The New Straits Times. Others have attended my series of talks on the subject. The final inspiration came from the CEO of a local company, who said to me: 'Your series of articles on the subject has helped me and my ... company become conscious of the importance of managing change. I wish you would put all these messages into a book to create the awareness and serve as a constant reminder for managers to manage effectively the competitive and dynamic business environment.' Here then, is the book which resulted. I have divided my subject into chapters, under five subject headings:
The chapters in this book cover a wide range of topics with two key objectives: (1) To increase the change awareness level of managers in their business environment. (2) To enhance their change capabilities in anticipating and responding pro-actively to change. To drive home the key messages on the critical capability for managing change, some large global corporations have been cited as illustrations to provide the maximum impact. While many local and regional companies could have been used, this book lays stress on the powerful lessons which I believe companies from the East can learn from some of the mismanagement of those in the West. These are interspersed with insights I have developed in my consulting engagements with many large local corporations. These insights have been captured as recommendations or directives for managing the various aspects of organizations (people, processes, strategies and technology) in an integrated fashion. I must also add that my experience while working with the international consulting firm, Andersen Consulting, has helped me to develop a strong commitment towards making change work in organizations. It has also helped me to understand the differences as well as the similarities of change issues in different companies of varied industries, across nations. I was made very aware of this in late 1991 when I conducted a course on Organization Change with a group of 40 senior consultants from more than 18 different countries in Andersen Consulting's professional development centre in Chicago. The five days of intensive real life case studies of client engagements and the exchange of experiences, as to which approaches worked and which did not, have provided me valuable insights on how to develop some common change capabilities for organizations to compete and survive in the 21 st Century. The winds of change are blowing towards Asia. The World Bank has estimated that by the year 2000, Asia will account for half of the world's trade. The region will become the targeted hub for intensive competition for investment and trade. As U.S. President Bill Clinton commented, 'The fastest growing region is the Asia Pacific, a region that has to be vital for our future.' The time has come for Asian companies to start developing their change capabilities to enable them to survive the increasing degree of competition and relentless change. Organizations can no longer wait and react to change. CEOs and managers can help their organizations avoid the mishaps of some of the large corporations of the West by applying the powerful lessons in this book.
