Sample ChapterPREFACE As a change management consultant having worked closely with over hundreds of thousands of CEOs, managers and executives in organisations, I begin to realize that despite the advancement of technology driven by the Internet, emails, websites, knowledge-based portals , e-commerce and the new economy, many leaders are still struggling with building better people skills in leading change in the workplace. As leaders in organisations try to implement initiatives of change be it a new IT system, ISO 9000, the Six Sigma, a reengineered process, a new organisation structure or a new corporate strategy, they face the following common challenges:
Overcoming these challenges effectively requires tremendous change leadership skills that go beyond communication tools provided by modern technology. Leaders need to become change wizards. The dictionary defines the word, “wizard” as a person who is outstandingly clever in some specified field. To get workforce to adapt and win over the forces of globalisation, democratisation and digitalisation, truly requires leaders who are very clever in getting people to change their thinking and way of work to achieve the goals of the organisations. Thus the topics covered in this book are to enable leaders in organisations to develop this mission critical skill of becoming change wizards. This book has been divided into 4 key parts, namely, Orchestrating Change, Motivating People, Developing People and Self Development. As with all my other books, this book is not meant to be academic in nature. In fact, a lot of the contents come from my practical experience while working in our consulting engagements with our clients. The issues discussed are real and the approaches and strategies provided here are proven ones that have worked in organisations. Of course, each company is different in nature and the issues and challenges facing them could be quite different. However from our consulting work with over 300 Asian organisations, I have realised that are some very common problems facing Asian organisations. Here lies the value of this book. I would like to encourage CEOs, leaders and executives to utilise the ideas, strategies and recommendations that are shared in this book and apply them wherever applicable in your organisations accordingly. I am confident that the knowledge you gain from this book can help you achieve your organisation goals in a more effective but less stressful manner.
