Preface

I have long felt compelled to write this book, and in fact had a passion to write this book for a very good reason. In the course of my work as a consultant and speaker, I meet thousands of executives across Asia each year-CEOs, entrepreneurs, general managers, vice presidents, managers and executives of corporations in various industries. Many of them are very interested in managing and implementing change in their respective organizations. I spend countless hours listening to corporate leaders detail the challenges they face in instituting change within their organizations. Some are amazed at the slow pace at which people cope with change. Many are exasperated at the resistance their people put up to change. Others feel trapped in a no-win situation where they feel they have done everything possible to effect change, without achieving significant results.

The truth of the matter is that about 80% of change initiatives fail. This is confirmed by statistics on the lack of effectiveness of widespread programmes like Business Process Re-engineering and Total Quality Manage ment. I wanted to write a book that would show executives of Asian companies how to finally make change programmes succeed.

I do not doubt the value of re-engineering as a tool to improve produc tivity in organizations. As a consultant, I have personally used such meth ods myself. However, what concerns me is the way organizations go about implementing methods of change. Too often, tools of change are used in an overly mechanical or clinical manner. The emphasis has been on changing procedures and processes, rather than on changing people. In the journey to developing the perfect business process, many organizations have over looked the people factor in achieving success.

Many organizational changes are decided at the top and forced down wards with little input from people below. Little time is allocated to understanding mindsets within the company, and even less resources are expended on changing mindsets. Yet no positive and productive change can occur in an organization until it addresses the mindset of its employees.

My first book, Change To Win, briefly addressed the people factor in the implementation of change. It created an initial awareness among man agers of the need to address people's mindsets when trying to change their behavior and the results of their actions. This book will provide more detailed, practical insights into transforming organizations by changing people's mindsets in order to achieve positive and productive change.

Mindset refers to the way people think about, feel about and act towards any situation with which they are faced. It determines:

  • How people see problems
  • The assumptions they make
  • The way they define opportunities and threats in the market
  • The way they assess strengths and weaknesses
  • The areas of priority they identify
  • The way they rationalize away problems and justify inaction
  • The solutions they come up with
  • The way they go about changing or effecting change

In an increasingly competitive environment driven by the demand for better, faster, cheaper and more environmentally friendly products and services, the ability to change fast has become a critical survival factor for companies. All changes, be they strategic, procedural, structural or technological, must begin with the right mindset. Consequently, the top priority for Asian organizations today should be changing and managing their people's mindset in a positive direction. Organizations that do not address mindset problems will be part of the 80% that fail in their change efforts. Those that realize the importance of mindset over matter will be able to transform their people's thinking and will come out winners.
