and managers who want to increase the performance of their
organisations."
"This is a powerful book … Read this book before it
is too late." "Victor Tan has, very ably, managed to identify and
integrate the crucial elements of good management that all senior managers
should be acquainted with in leading their organisations". "This book helps examine the key elements within you and change your
mindset from being a victim to a creative force that will transform your
life. It was for this reason that Mr Victor Tan was appointed as a
consultant to initiate the corporate culture change programme in Sistem
Transit Aliran Ringan Sdn Bhd." "This book addresses the missing link between competency and
performance in organisations. Unless leaders in organisations learn to
release the trapped minds of individuals, skill-building efforts will not
result in higher productivity. Victor's latest book is a mustread for all
CEOs and managers who want to increase the performance of their
organisations." "In my years of handling organisation transformation, I have always
been fascinated by the fact that employees can unleash new strengths from
within them when their minds are sufficiently tickled into positive
action. Victor's book provides excellent insights into this aspect. It has
valuable pointers that can help leaders get the best out of the
workforce." "This is a powerful book that can transform the way you lead your
organisation in the 21st Century. Victor's message is most timely. I fully
agree with Victor that the ability to change mindsets is the most
important survival skill in this new millennium. I will make it a
must-read book for all my consultants. Read this book before it is too
late." "Victor speaks with full authority and credibility on the subject of
change having helped many Asian organisations including MAICSA
successfully manage change. Victor is a pioneer in the development of
conducive mindsets to allow individuals to achieve their maximum potential
in the workplace. In this enlightening new book, he draws from his 20
years of experience as a practitioner and a corporate consultant of more
than 200 Asian organisations to share on how leaders can help individuals
release trapped minds to achieve higher productivity. This book is
essential for anyone in a managerial role. " "For as long as I have known him, Victor Tan has been passionate about
helping Malaysian organisations manage change with the least amount of
necessary pain. This third book of his should prove a boon to managers who
need to lead in these difficult times." "Releasing Trapped Minds is a timely reminder that effective management

promoted and exemplified by the leaders of organisations. Victor Tan has,
very ably, managed to identify and integrate the crucial elements of good

Sample Chapter Preface At the outset, I would like to assure you that this is not just another run-of the-mill book about management. This book is the culmination of over two decades of hands-on and practical experience pertaining to organisational issues and challenges which I have gained from my consulting in over 200 Asian organisations and training over 20,000 executives from various industries. This is certainly not meant to be an academic book but a book that delves into the real issues, conditions and people in the real world. I have spent over 20 years working in many companies in the capacity as a manager as well as a consultant. I have undertaken in-depth research and studies on how to improve performance of organisations. Of the many reasons for poor performance, I have found one consistent and persistent root cause, that is, people do not do what they are supposed to do. Too many spent too much time justifying why something cannot be done or why they should not be the ones doing it or give one thousand and one excuses why something should not be done in the first place. General managers, managers, executives and lower-level staff just fail to live up to their roles. More often than not, they do not perform up to par not because they do not have the ability but because they do not see why they should do things differently or better. Some do not see the benefits. Others do not see the rationale. Yet others think their old ways are better. Many have blindspots regarding weaknesses and flaws in their organisations. Some continue with their assumptions which are no longer valid. Many more become complacent along the way in their career. There are those who are stuck with their unproductive habit. And finally, there are those with a negative attitude towards any change or improvement in organisations. All the same, these problems imply that many people in organisations are in possession of trapped minds which deter them from undertaking positive and productive change. This book is about freeing these trapped minds. It is about enabling people to overcome challenges in the workplace, increase their value through better leadership skills, and build a track record of increasing performance. My argument is that employees actually desire to increase their performance in organisations. My basis for saying so is simple: through better performance, they will build up a positive track record; through better track record, they increase their value in the market-place; and when they have increased their value through better track record of performance, the pressure is on the management to reward them. If they are not rewarded, some other organisations will. However, organisations should have no qualms about rewarding employees who have consistently build up a positive track record of performance because they have also increased the value of the organisations in the process. Thus, this is a win-win partnership for both the employees and organisations. And this productive partnership can only be possible, if management can release the trapped minds in their organisations, to enable people to do what they are supposed to do in the first place.
