Releasing Trapped Minds
The Strategic Role of Managers in Improving Productivity in Organizations
by Victor S.L.Tan
CEO of KL Strategic chnage Consulting

The greatest waste in human resource is the trapped minds in organisations. A trapped mind is unable to adapt, change and grow. It stifles the capability and resourcefulness of a person. It is neither imaginative nor creative. It is retrogressive, not progressive. It cannot innovate and come up with new solutions. Releasing Trapped Minds is certainly imperative for leaders and executives who want their organisations to be progressive and successful. This book provides a detailed guide on how to get the best out of people and how to release trapped minds to improve the productivity and profitability of organisations.

The book explains in detail:

  • How to open minds and win commitment
  • How to overcome adversity
  • How to create opportunities
  • How to motivate people
  • How to lead with excellence

Preface

At the outset, I would like to assure you that this is not just another run-of the-mill book about management. This book is the culmination of over two decades of hands-on and practical experience pertaining to organisational issues and challenges which I have gained from my consulting in over 200 Asian organisations and training over 20,000 executives from various industries. This is certainly not meant to be an academic book but a book that delves into the real issues, conditions and people in the real world.

I have spent over 20 years working in many companies in the capacity as a manager as well as a consultant. I have undertaken in-depth research and studies on how to improve performance of organisations. Of the many reasons for poor performance, I have found one consistent and persistent root cause, that is, people do not do what they are supposed to do. Too many spent too much time justifying why something cannot be done or why they should not be the ones doing it or give one thousand and one excuses why something should not be done in the first place.

General managers, managers, executives and lower-level staff just fail to live up to their roles. More often than not, they do not perform up to par not because they do not have the ability but because they do not see why they should do things differently or better. Some do not see the benefits. Others do not see the rationale. Yet others think their old ways are better. Many have blindspots regarding weaknesses and flaws in their organisations. Some continue with their assumptions which are no longer valid. Many more become complacent along the way in their career. There are those who are stuck with their unproductive habit. And finally, there are those with a negative attitude towards any change or improvement in organisations.

All the same, these problems imply that many people in organisations are in possession of trapped minds which deter them from undertaking positive and productive change. This book is about freeing these trapped minds. It is about enabling people to overcome challenges in the workplace, increase their value through better leadership skills, and build a track record of increasing performance.

My argument is that employees actually desire to increase their performance in organisations. My basis for saying so is simple: through better performance, they will build up a positive track record; through better track record, they increase their value in the market-place; and when they have increased their value through better track record of performance, the pressure is on the management to reward them. If they are not rewarded, some other organisations will.

However, organisations should have no qualms about rewarding employees who have consistently build up a positive track record of performance because they have also increased the value of the organisations in the process. Thus, this is a win-win partnership for both the employees and organisations. And this productive partnership can only be possible, if management can release the trapped minds in their organisations, to enable people to do what they are supposed to do in the first place.
