I agree with Dr Victor Tan that the key aim of leaders today is to win hearts and change minds to get people to change fast enough before it is too little, too late. I believe this is probably the first change management book in the world where the significant lessons of change are exquisitely crystallised into poems that rhyme all the way to make them distinctive and memorable. This is truly a powerful book whose time has come and I shall make it a compulsory reading for all the leaders in my organisation.

PREFACE

We can either be overwhelmed  by events and happenings to become change victims or we can unleash the power of change within us to become change winners.  The truth is we have a choice.  We are not trapped.  We are not too old or too young. We do not need great positions, status or authority.   We do not have to wait out to change. We do not need complex ideas and complicated steps.  We are not powerless, helpless and hopeless.   We can change now.

The Secret Of Change: There is a  power of change within us. The secret is not about some ambiguous  Law Of Attraction.  It is not simply  wishing for things to change. It is not thinking about change and imagining things to change by themselves.
It is not about waiting for some cosmic power of the Universe to create the change.  The true secret is that we create the desired change by unleashing the internal power within us and  take the necessary  actions to make things happen out there.   Everyone of us can change our ways, our work, the quality of our  relationships and our lives for the better.   We can simply change with our everyday little efforts we take to improve things in the workplace and in our lives.  In this aspect,  Helen Keller (the famous blind/deaf author and lecturer) understood the Secret Of Change: “I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do.” The secret lies in the subtitle of the book. There  is a proper art of changing others. It is not through forcing people but getting people want to change. To do this requires the art of winning hearts and changing minds  of people to take those necessarily steps be it big or small towards positive change in a consistent manner. That is what this book is all about.

This book comprises  fifty special poems written from the heart, mind and soul and categorised into five  chapters namely;
Chapter 1 Managing Change
Chapter 2 Managing People
Chapter 3 Developing A Conducive Workplace
Chapter 4 Self Management
Chapter 5 Being The Best

Each of the chapter comes with the relevant poems.  Each poem covers a certain aspect of change which resonates with sound reasons, rhymes and rhythms to win hearts and change minds toward taking positive and  productive actions.  Perhaps the question you might ask is:  Why a book on Change in the form of poems?  My answer is simple: There is a rhythm, rhyme and reason in change.

There is rhythm in change.
Yes, change in the corporate world has uncertainty and unpredictability about it. However, within the chaos and ambiguity, an astute leader can find a meaningful pattern - and catch its rhythm. Companies grow from small start-up ventures to large successful giants. If they become complacent and fail to change, they eventually fail. Likewise, many companies started as centralised organisations when they are small. As they grew bigger, they decentralised. When things seemed to get out of control, they centralised again in areas of critical functions.   One needs to adapt to the rhythm of change in the workplace or in our lives, in this specific case either to let go or to tighten  control.

There is a reason for change.
Leaders should not change according to their whims and fancies.  There are sound reasons for change for companies as well as for individuals. Companies need to change to improve the bottom line. To survive, they need to adapt to the changes  brought about by globalization.  In organisations,  individuals need to change to increase their knowledge and skills and  enable them to be more competitive and valuable. In their personal lives, they need to change their thinking, ways and habits to adapt to the  different stages of life and the roles they play.

There is rhyme in change.
There is a need to align their systems, structures, strategies and skills  to meet the changing needs of the marketplace.  When internal changes that are implemented are not aligned with external factors, companies  become irrelevant and eventually failed – in a similar manner, dinosaurs become extinct as they failed to change and adapt to the environment.   Likewise, companies need to change outdated policies and procedures to improve decision-making to “rhyme” with the increasing competitiveness in the industry.

In poetic form, an organisation needs to:
Adapt to the rhythm
To change with the season,
Through sound business reason
 To grow its business kingdom.

May you translate this poetic reading into positive and profitable change for yourself and your company.

Dr Victor S.L.Tan, 2008.
